Safety
at the ATM . . .
how to protect
yourself
Rarely do people think about
their personal safety when at an ATM. Unfortunately, ATMs
can be unsafe places if you're not careful. NOCCU wants all
of our members to have safe experiences while at ATMs, so we
put together these tips to help:
- Make sure no one can see your secret code as you key it into the ATM, shield the keyboard as you input your code.
- To keep your account information confidential, take
receipts/transaction records with you.
- Have someone accompany you to the ATM after dark.
- Do not count or display any money you received from the ATM. Put your money in your pocket
or purse and count it later.
- If you observe or sense suspicious persons or circumstances, don't use the ATM, or if you are in the middle of a transaction, cancel it, leave the
area. You can always come back later, or use another ATM.
- Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night.
If you use the ATM at night, park close by in a well-lighted area.
- If the lights around an ATM are not working, don't use it. If shrubbery or trees block the view, select another ATM.
- Always lock your car.
- If you are using a drive-up ATM, be sure your passenger windows and doors are locked.
