researching and negotiating a deal yourself. Whichever
choice you make, be sure to contact NOCCU first to have your
loan pre-approved so you'll know how much you can
comfortably afford. For your convenience, we'll take your
application right over the phone!
Auto Buying Service: Advocar
is the online car-buying service of Autoland, which is the
leading provider of auto purchase services to credit unions.
They have one goal: to help credit union members get the
best possible price without all the hassles often associated
with buying a car. Why not let them use their volume buying
power to find the new or used car you want at a great price and
avoid the hassle of negotiating a deal yourself. they are
also available by phone at 1-800-234-6999.
Negotiating a Deal: If you
prefer to negotiate a deal yourself, be sure to keep the
following tips in mind:
- When you've decided what car you want,
call the dealer's credit union fleet manager and
make an appointment. You'll most likely avoid the
high-pressure sales situation.
- Know what the dealer paid for the car,
the factory invoice price. Always base
negotiations UP from the invoice rather than down
from the sticker price (MSRP). In the case of a
used vehicle, check the Kelley Blue Book Values.
This information is available at the credit union
as well as on the Web. See Web Resources.
- Watch out for overpriced dealer add-ons.
Weigh the cost and value of fabric treatments,
rust proofing, and paint sealants.
- You'll also find information on factory
rebates and dealer incentives on the Web. You'll
get the rebate no matter what you pay for the car,
so don't let it affect the price you pay.
Factory-to-dealer incentives can be retained by
the dealer or passed on to the buyer. Sources of
this information include Motor Trend and Edmunds.
See Web Resources.
- To meet quotas and rack up bonuses,
dealers are often eager to sell at the end of the
month.
- If you have a vehicle to trade in, treat
the trade-in as a separate negotiation and know
the value of the car. The Kelley Blue Book used
Car Price Guide is available in our office. Call
us and we'll look it up for you, or check the Kelley Blue Book website.
- Remember, the best leverage you may have
during negotiations is the willingness to walk
away. Don't be pressured into buying today. Shop
around.
